t Romanesque Tveje Merløse Kirke with its pretty gardens

Albeit a miniature version of Roskilde’s original 12th-century cathedral, the church in Tveje Merløse, south of Holbæk, is one of the most interesting Romanesque sacred buildings in Denmark. Its most distinctive features are the two near-identical square towers. The history of the site as a place of worship is believed to date back to the Viking era; some records suggest it was used for worship in the 3rd century.

At one time the church contained some colourful 13th-century frescoes depicting, among other things, the devil and the motif of God’s Majesty, a common medieval theme found particularly in the region of Øresund. These have now been removed and are on display in the Nationalmuseet in Copenhagen.
